If someone tells you they don’t like hearing dirty stories, they’re lying. Everyone loves a bit of smut, whether they publicly admit it or not. If you’re comfortable with your love of filth, then this is the event for you. Smut Slam is a monthly open-mic dirty storytelling event hosted by Cameryn Moore, and being open mic means that anyone from the audience is welcome to get up and tell a story. The main stipulations are are the story must be yours, must be related to sex, and must be relevant to that month’s theme (although this can always be open to interpretation). This month the theme is ‘Greedy’.
The stories may make you laugh, they may bring a tear to your eye, they may make you squirm – you never know what is in store. There is a five minutes limit for each story and as well as the main stipulations, there is also a strict set of rules for storytellers – there is no space for homophobia, transphobia, sexism, racism, or any other form of discrimination. A select panel of judges determines who the best storytellers are, and there are prizes for first, second and third. If you’re not a fan of onstage performance, feel free to sit back and observe, but there are no interruptions allowed – including making-out in the dark.
As a host, Cameryn is perfect. She keeps the energy high and makes sure everything is staying above board. Oh, and she knows a thing or two about sex. After working for years as a phone sex operator and writing solo shows like Phone Whore, she created the Smut Slam series. Fed up with the stigma surrounding sex at spoken word events, Cameryn started Smut Slam in Boston before moving to Berlin, and now Smut Slams are happening in cities all over the world.
There is a real community feeling at Smut Slam and it’s a wonderfully supportive atmosphere, so if you’re too shy to get up and tell a story, this is a still a chance for you to make some new friends. And you can always tell a story at the next one…
