GRRL HAUS CINEMA, an ongoing programme of forward-thinking flicks from women, trans, non-binary and genderqueer filmmakers, are back with their monthly collab alongside Berlin’s favourite movie merchants, Mobile Kino. Formed stateside in 2014 and Berlin-based since 2016, GRRL HAUS is a platform showcasing DIY and low budget work from underrepresented voices within the media arts – promoting inclusivity and reaching a wider audience is the name of the game.
June’s instalment is a bumper edition featuring a host of short films and video art from a mix of local, national and international artists. The night’s programming spans a range of disciplines too, covering narrative, documentary, experimental and conceptual.
There’s a handful of artists representing Berlin’s prowess for provocative filmmaking. For fans of the surreal, Luise Sandberger’s plasticine machinations in Waschmachine traverse a flimsy tightrope between cringe and comedy. Johanna von Stackelberg’s lighthearted drama Susana is a touchingly human commentary on one woman’s pursuit of purpose. From across the pond, America’s Brittney Hollinger’s Still Last Night captures the hazy afterglow of a New York woman’s night out to haunting effect.
We could go on and wax lyrical about each and every picture on the bill – they really are all that good. But that would be a massive spoiler. Basically, get yourself down to Alte Münze, settle in and dive into some top drawer cinema from a host of movie makers at the peak of their game.
