Pop culture makes us think of the great icons of music, old movie classics and the great novels you’re forced to read in university. These things shape us and our everyday culture – but this should also include the things that often don’t really stand the test of time. The Pop-Kultur Festival in the Kulturbrauerei tries to give the term a different twist, featuring a more up to date approach on what popular culture could be if we broaden our minds and question the industry behind it.
Trying to view pop culture as something discursive, the festival focuses on a diverse line-up from a broad international background. Rather than plain consumerism, the festival offers “brainfood” instead. From the 21st to the 23rd of August, concerts, exhibitions, installations, and talks, as well as movies, workshops and DJ sets will try to reexamine our collective concept of pop culture – everyone is invited to challenge their own biases.
The line-up highlights include Mykki Blanco, Anna Calvi, German punk legend Die goldenen Zitronen and Молчат Дома (Molchat Doma). Switch off the self-fulfilling prophecies of your streaming algorithms for a few days and dive into a pop culture bootcamp straight out of Adorno’s dreams.
