Making Plans with LOLA: 13.07-18.07

Our pick of this week’s cultural happenings

Words By Cathy Bijur

Berlin is opening up again, which means more and more events are happening. This is amazing, of course, but also a little overwhelming. After seemingly endless months of nothing going on we now have bars, open airs, art exhibitions, film screenings, live gigs and more to choose from. We forgot what FOMO felt like.

Getting back into the groove of everything and following what’s happening seems like a skill a lot of us have forgotten, or at least are a bit rusty on. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with our list of event picks for next week. Now get out of the house and enjoy that sweet, sweet freedom!

Wild Frictions: The Politics and
Poetics of Interruption

________________________________________

Category: Art
Where: Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien
When: until August 22. 2021
Opening hours : Sunday to Wednesday, 12:00 to 18:00 / Thursdays to Saturdays, 12:00 to 20:00
Admission: Free

Wild Frictions: The Politics and Poetics of Interruption is a group exhibition curated by Sandra Teitge and Amara Antilla featuring the works of almost 20 artists. The works in this group show circulate around the concepts of interruption and disruption, and bridge across mediums ranging from text, video, sound installation, and performance. The show explores the concept of meaning-making and emancipation as non-linear and subversive, existing in the affective spaces in between collective movements or traditional notions of speech and text. In exploring the concepts of play, mischief-making, and subversive acts through the lens of the pandemic, Wild Frictions captures communal anxieties, tensions, and loss of control as tools for potential – tool to create more crevices, disruptions, and in betweens that can open up and be explored. Although it opened in June, the show is ongoing until August 22.

Festaal Kreuzberg is opening its beer garden for an open air concert by singer, songwriter, producer, and visual artist, Evelinn Trouble. Evelinn is both poet and performer, taking influence from the likes of Thom Yorke and Patti Smith. She is often described as being both a poetic songwriter and an explosive vocal presence. Her musical background weaves through genres and styles, starting with her mother’s influence as a professional jazz singer, moving into her early musical experience as a vocalist in industrial rock bands, and finally arriving at her current solo project as an emotive, dark vocalist. A risk-taker at heart, none of Evelinn’s releases ever seem to sound the same.

Concrete Comedy
Stand Up Showcase

________________________________________

Category: Comedy
Where: KiezKino
When: 19:00
Admission: 8

Concrete Comedy, in association with Mobile Kino Berlin, presents an English-language open air comedy showcase hosted by one of our favourite comedians, Daniel Stern. It takes place in an entirely open air venue in Charlottenburg, which makes a nice change from experiencing comedy in smoky bars and basements (and bonus points for being outside of the Kreuzkölln bubble!). The event is BYOB and kicks off with a scheduled time for drinks and meet-up. At 20:00, Daniel Stern will guide the audience into the line-up for the evening, which features performances by Amelia Jane Hunter and Tyrone Stallone. Hit the spӓti, pack a picnic, and enjoy a night of the best medicine.

For more information on the Concrete Comedy Stand Up Showcase, visit the events page.
