Spoken word has seen a resurgence in recent years with the likes of Scroobius Pip, Kate Tempest and Hollie McNish breaking into the relative mainstream. Where digital platforms harm artists on the one hand, on the other hand they are great enablers, and slam poets such as FreeQuency enjoy well-deserved popularity beyond local clubs thanks to spotlighting from YouTube, Buzzfeed and others.
This Thursday at lit-nerd haven, St George’s English Bookshop, ‘Here, Here, There,’ will have readings from poets, Max Czollek, Frank Keizer, Rachel O’Reilly and Daniela Seel. The rawness and immediacy of a live performance can out-punch the finest of YouTube videos (even if you’re watching in Super HD), so this event is well worth the battle against those January winds.
In the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, John Koenig defines Vellichor as ‘the strange wistfulness of used bookstores’. Throw in some poetry from four international artists and you have the makings of a very pleasant evening.
