Oddcity Episode Two: Where There’s Wheels, There’s a Way

Mobilising Berlin’s new arrivals

In order to fight against the ever-increasing right-wing rhetoric of the AfD and the rising anti-refugee sentiment in Europe and further afield, Lucas Heidenreich and his mates decided to welcome some of Berlin’s newest inhabitants by providing them with the most vital tools: bicycles.

Rückenwind Berlin: Fahrräder für Flüchtlinge (Bikes for Refugees) provides exactly what they advertise. They invite members of Berlin’s refugee community into their Kreuzberg workshop to build a bespoke bike for themselves. Rückenwind uses recycled bike parts that are donated from all over the city. The parts are upcycled in typical Berlin fashion, and repurposed for their new owners. The project aims, not only to provide a means of mobility, but also to build relationships between Berliners old and new.

Odd City is a collaborative series by filmmaker James McBreen and his production company Overland Originals; Grover, a platform supporting creatives; and LOLA Magazine.
