Final Girls Berlin Film Festival

Feminist horror film galore

Erika Clugston

Date: 09.06.17 – 11.06.17
Venue: Kino Moviemento

There will be horror galore at the second edition of the Final Girls Berlin Film Festival. With thoughtful twists on your usual genre serial killers, ghastly villains, children with masks, and a scary amount more, the festival has it all – showcasing women and non-binary horror filmmakers and breaking down the boundaries of horror as a genre. It promises to be a monstrosity of an event with three feature films, eight curated short blocks, and a discussion on the ‘horror hag’ as a sub-genre. There will also be a workshop on representations of the ‘other’ and an art exhibition featuring five female artists working with horror.

Childer (dir. Aislinn Clarke, UK, 2016)

In the words of festival co-director Sara Neidorf: “The films we’re presenting relish in various forms of resistance: decimating traditional representations of women in film; blurring bodily boundaries; highlighting the perversions lurking within the nuclear family structure; contorting the conventions of romance; painting bloody portraits of revenge.” Co-director Eli Lewy adds: “The films screening in FGBFF express women’s fantasies and fears in poignant, new ways, showing that horror is fertile ground for feminist filmmaking.”

Mark your calendars and book your tickets now for a brutal and bloody film festival that will keep you on the edge of your seats right up until it scares your pants off.
